l guess it can drain water better or

They are concrete bricks.

The advantages of them are as follows.

You can dig a hole in them & replace them without leaving a different
repair mark.
Cheap, because they are laid straight on to a sand bed, they do not need
hardcore & a foundation.
They do not crack like concrete or tarmac.
They look good.
The surface is far stronger than laid concrete as they are all made at a
factory in controlled conditions.
You don't rely on good weather before you lay the surface, [it can rain
while you are doing the job]
They are the cheapest of ways to lay a good drive.

They are not suitable for fast roads, only for side roads & drives.

If by brick you mean old-fashioned brick vs. the red brick you

see in homes nowadays.

Then the answer is durability. This is why European roads last longer than

American roads. I know that brick is more durable than asphalt. I don't

know who would win w/ concrete vs. brick, but seeing how most american
roads are paved w/ asphalt this wouldn't be as large an issue.

Obviously the aesthetics also comes into play, but that isn't physically
more advantageous.

It was an old-time way of paving roads, created before they had

machines for laying down and smoothing out blacktop. The only reason they

do a newer road with them is for aesthetics, or to maintain an

Aesthetics. They make the roadway look more quaint. There is

There is no good ENGINEERING reason to do so. In fact, most are not
really brick, but concrete that is colored, & patterned to look like
brick.

An engineer is main job is often to keep architects & designers bolted to
the ground. We sometimes fail.
